- The FDI World Dental Federation notation (ISO 3950) is a double-digital system used worldwide. The first digit indicates the quadrant, and the second denotes the tooth in the quadrant.
- The Universal Numbering System is mostly used in the United States. Teeth are numbered from 1 to 32, counting clockwise from the upper right.
- Alphanumeric notation divides the mouth into four quadrants — upper right (UR), upper left (UL), lower left (LL), and lower right (LR) — and assigns each tooth in each quadrant a number (1-8.)
- The Palmer notation is most suitable for computerized charting. It uses a numerical- and sign-based system with the same primary and secondary teeth marker as alphanumeric notation.
