5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Buy Dental Practice SoftwareIn the market for software for your dental practice? Whether you're opening a new practice or looking for a new solution for your existing practice, it's a big decision. In a previous post, we talked about three questions you need to ask your software provider. Before you even get to that part, you need to think through your needs.

It's hard to shop for something if you don't know your needs and wants. You wouldn't head to the car dealership without knowing what you want. Even if you don't know the exact car you want to buy, you know what kind of features you want or what you value. Fuel efficiency? Power? Stereo? You get the picture.

So, as you get starting on purchasing dental practice software, here are a few things to think about:

  • Do you want a cloud-based system or a legacy, on-site system? A cloud-based dental software allows you to access your software from anywhere you have internet. It's also secure and you spend less time maintaining the system. We've talked a lot about the benefits of a cloud-based system, so you can read up on those on our site.

  • What features are most important to you? Are you looking for EHR? Scheduling? Reputation management? Patient communications? All of the above? By knowing what you want and need, you can more easily sift through your options. You can also compare more readily between programs to find the right fit for you.

  • How will you handle additional needs like claims? X-rays? Credit card charges? If you're starting a new practice, you'll need solutions to help you with all these tasks. Some software programs will integrate these, others require a third-party system. You'll want to cover all these bases as you research these option.

  • Who will be working in the system and how will you train them? This is a key question to knowing how user-friendly and how much training your team will need. It also helps you think through asking the software company about their training and onboarding. There may be additional costs associated, and you'll definitely want to know that.

  • How invested are you in maintaining and keeping the system running? How often will you have to update? Can you do it yourself or will you need to hire someone from their company or an independent IT contractor to do it? This is one of the benefits of cloud-based software. They handle the updates and security so you don't have to worry about it.

Well, that's technically more than five questions. But there's quite a bit to think about when you're making this investment in your practice. Before you even start shopping around, it's key to think through what you'll need and expect. We hope these help.
